As summer is approaching, I thought it would be valuable to discuss how to stay healthy and safe during the summer time. Summer time can bring exciting opportunities and a chance to relax. Some people spend their time inside, enjoying their free time and taking a break from the busy world. Others pass their time out in the sun, taking in the nice weather. No matter what you prefer to do, it is important to remember these important health tips:
1. Protect yourself from sun rays
With beach trips and nice weather, many people are heavily exposed to UV rays. While sunlight does provide vitamin D, it is necessary to remember that it can also cause damage to your skin. Ensure that you are constantly reapplying sunscreen, at least every two hours. Even if you do not usually burn, it is still important to adhere to this practice. Be mindful of the UV index – even when it may seem cloudy outside, that does not mean you are not able to get sunburnt.
2. Get outside!
While it might be tempting to spend your time inside sleeping in and taking a well earned break from the stress of the school year, it is healthy to go outside as well! Find a balance. Even if you do not spend much time outdoors, going for a short walk or reading outside for 15 minutes can help improve your mindset and provide you with vitamin D.
Some fun activities to do outside:
Go swimming with friends
Go biking
Ask a friend to go on a hike with you
Draw with chalk
Have a water balloon fight
Go on a run
3. Stay hydrated
Staying hydrated during summer is even more important than it is in other seasons. Because of the hot temperatures, you can become dehydrated very easily. Therefore it is even more important to ensure that you are drinking the necessary amount each day. Aim to drink 48-64 oz per day!
